27/12/98 (Calroth): Posted submission details and a sample article.

12/12/98 (Calroth): Updated a few small details regarding article submission: keep your articles with you until further notice.

Us...

The Newsletter officially opened on the 9th of December, 1998, and everyone is scrambling to get it going. We in the editing team are still making the basic templates and guidelines to it, so here's the main people in the editing team...

Missy - Owner and committee member of the Editing Team, she pulls us together. :)

Lord Jedi, Calroth - Setting the guidelines, rules and space for the editing.

Nathaniel - The technical guy, he sets all the help in IRC for us and newbie people

Final_Fantasy (me) - I'm the net guy, I set up the FTP servers and the WWW pages, etc...

We're all trying to make this the best newsletter ever! So bookmark this page for more info soon!

How To Submit Articles!

Here we go.

There are two ways of submitting articles. You can either get in touch with your channel manager (nymphette for #news-articles), or you can send e-mail direct to [email protected], if you've already got the go-ahead from your manager or you're writing on your own.

If you have any questions, just pop into #news-editing, or find and ask missy or Calroth.

The first issue hasn't been set a deadline yet. But keep checking, it'll be soon.

Guidelines for Submission of Material

Here are the guidelines for submitting material for publication.

Here's a sample article. Have a look.

PG-rated material only. Anything not suitable may be deleted.

300-500 words for general articles, 500-800 words for feature articles. This figure isn't set in stone.

10 articles will be published in each newsletter, not including the cover or table of contents. This figure isn't set in stone.

We always reserve the right to edit your article for reasons of length or grammar, but we won't change the meaning of what you say.

Send your articles to us in plain text format. If you wish to have specific formatting, just note the details at the end of your article. If you want your article published in a certain issue or on a certain date, then tell us. We might not be able to publish when you want us to, but we'll try.

At the top of your article, clearly mark the column you're writing for, the title of your piece, and your name (or nickname). You may also include your e-mail address (which won't be published). For example, Technical: Advanced ircII Scripting, by Calroth.

Name your file column_title_author.txt, i.e. Newbie_ChanOPcommands_Calroth.txt. You might have to shorten the filename a bit if it's too long. Be creative. Keep in mind that you can't include the # (hash symbol) in filenames.

If you wish to include graphics, make sure they're in gif or jpeg format, named similarly to your article but with a trailing number, i.e. Tips_IrcleFaces_Calroth_01.jpg. And reference them in your article.

You'll have an opportunity to preview the newsletter before it goes to press. We may not always have the time to e-mail you personally, but we'll always place a preview copy online prior to publication.

You retain copyright to your work, and we'll have a notice in the newsletter that effectively states this.

The deadline for submitting unedited articles for publication is the Wednesday night before publication. We editors have to have final copy ready by Friday night for the designers to publish on the weekend.

If your article doesn't conform to these guidelines, it may be deleted without notice.

Guidelines for Editing Material!

Here are the guidelines for editing material for publication. Editors, take note!

Keep in mind the guidelines for submitting articles, and don't be afraid to trim or rearrange material to suit them. In fact, don't be afraid of changing the piece dramatically--this may be extreme, but sometimes you've just got to do it.

Always spell-check your articles. Always. No exceptions.

Keep a very high writing standard. We want to look like professionals (we might not actually be professionals, but that's a different story...)

Don't touch the graphics.

Word-wrapping isn't essential, and you may word-wrap as you wish. One space after full stops. Dumb quotes. We'll leave the designers to sort out the mess...

The articles belong in the home directory of the ftp site. The address is ftp://[email protected]/ (you'll need your password, too). Make sure that the articles are named according to the conventions above. Note: This address will change in the near future! Be aware.

Edit any article that you can--download, fix it up, and upload it. That's what you're paid for! (You're trying to tell me that we don't get paid? Piffle!)

If you edit an article, precede the filename with an ! (exclamation mark), for example, !Review_chatzone_Calroth.txt.

If you edit an article, stamp it at the top with your name and the date, for example, [Edited by Calroth, 10/12/98]. (The date format is dd/mm/yy, for all you Americans...)

Two people will edit each article independently before it's considered fit for publication. This means that there will be two ! symbols in the filename. This also has the side-effect that !! files will float to the top (or bottom) of the ftp file listing.

If more than two people want to edit an article, that's fine. Just keep adding exclamation marks as needed...

The final newsletter will be assembled Friday night before publication. That's the deadline. Any article that's not ready by the assembly time will not be published.
